Hoagland Trust becomes major sponsor of
Kids Fishing Derby
Marinette - The Hoagland Trust will donate $1,500.00 next year and each
succeeding year to the M&M Great Lakes Sport Fishermen for sponsorship of
the Kids Fishing Derby, Farmers & Merchants Bank & Trust President Tom
Maxwell has announced.
The bank is the trustee of the trust fund established by Joseph "Shorty"
Hoagland of Marinette, who died in 1985. Hoagland was an avid
fisherman who had a soft spot in his heart for children, despite having
none of his own. He left behind a trust of more than $90,000 with
the wish that interest earned by the money be used to provide activities
for kids between the ages of 5 and 12 that make them happy.
"Shorty Hoagland would be pleased with this donation because of his
interest in fishing and supporting youth," Maxwell said. "Shorty was
a fixture fishing off the Hattie Street Bridge. He wanted to help
young children because he had an unhappy childhood which caused him to run
away from home when he was just 13."
The M&M Great Lakes Sport Fishermen has been conducting the Kids Fishing
Derby each June at the Menominee Marina for the past 28 years. This
year, $8,000 in prizes were given away, in addition to providing
participants with food and refreshments.
The free event annually attracts upwards of 400 youngsters, plus their
parents and guardians.
"Our event stays free because of sponsors like the Hoagland fund," said
M&M Great Lakes Sport Fishermen President John Krueger. "The club is
very grateful for this donation. Many of the club's members remember
"Shorty Hoagland."
The donation from the Hoagland Trust will be used to provide more prizes
for the children who participate and to stock the marina with trout.
