1. Which birds steal soap from the bath?
2. Where do birds invest their money?
Let's Get Physical - Kids
who are active typically learn quicker and excel in school. That is
because participation in activities is not only fun, but it will give you
a sense of accomplishment.
So get off that couch and keep moving. The teachers will love how
smart you are when you return to school in the fall.
Parents Corner - What Your
Children Need to Know About Money, by Marguerite Lozier - Galaxy News -
July, 2009
Ages 3 - 5 - Teach your children the value of coins. This is a
perfect time to teach them the difference between pennies, nickels, dimes
and quarters. This is also a time when you can teach your children
the difference between wants and needs.
Ages 6 - 7 - This is a time to encourage your children to save. You
can help this along by starting them with an allowance. Once you
start them with an allowance, you need to make them pay for purchases from
their own funds. This will make them think before spending on things
they really don't need.
Ages 8 - 9 - This is a time to start opening bank accounts with them.
Show them how to make deposits and withdrawals. Show them how to
track their deposits and withdrawals when they receive their statements.
As their accounts build, teach them to invest in longer-term savings which
will pay them a higher interest rate. It will also allow them to
purchase those bigger ticket items they have been dreaming about.
Ages 10 - 13 - Now is the time to increase their allowance. More
money means more responsibility, so put them in charge of purchasing their
own clothes. This will be a big eye-opener, as we all know what a
pair of jeans costs.
Ages 14 - 15 - Start talking with your kids about getting a part-time job.
Summer is a good time to do this as their studies will not be jeopardized.
With a part-time job, you also need to increase their contributions
to the purchase of items such as cell phones, fun activities, etc.
Age 16 through college - This is a time when you need to teach them to
successfully manage their money. This is the age when spending gets
our of control for those that don't grasp the concept that everything
you buy has to be paid for either now or later. That plastic money
is a loan and there are fees and interest that go with it. They need
to know bout checking accounts and that just because you have checks
doesn't mean you have money.
Parents! Once you have done your job teaching your children about
money, don't bail them out if they make mistakes. Making them own up
to their financial mishaps from the start will make them better money
managers and quickly learn that this responsibility must be taken
seriously.
