Linda Wilke, Dr. Daniel Kallgren, and the Tin Man at Last Year's Banquet at Schussler's

Dr. Daniel Kallgren, after celebrating his 10th year as the Hi-Q Quiz Master, was told by Emcee Linda Wilke that he was being replaced by a modern Moderator... a Tin Man. Dr. Dan did not take the news graciously however. He vowed to "fight" the Tin Man for the job and "swore" (to use the vernacular) that he would be back in the Quiz Master's seat in 2006.
Stay tuned to see who will actually be the 2006 Quiz Master... Dr. Dan Kallgren or some short, rusty, old... Mr. Tin Man.

Associate Professor, History/Political Science

MA, University of Minnesota
BA, Gustavus Adolphus CollegeDr. Kallgren has taught history and political science courses at UW-Marinette since 1995. He is the advisor for the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society on campus and the Hi-Q Quiz Master. He has also served as the campus Colleges Senate representative for the past several years and received the Teacher of the Year award for 1997, 1998 and 2000.
Linda Wilke is the Director/Facilitator/Emcee/Scorekeeper for Hi-Q. She has been doing this for many years now and really enjoys working with the students. More later on Linda Wilke.
Bill Walker served as the Hi-Q Engineer/Technician for the last 24 years. Bill retired as of the end of last year's HI-Q Season. When I interviewed Bill today (Thursday Dec 22, 2005), he told me that he really enjoyed working with the program, watching the Academic Teams compete, and being part of such a "wonderful program... one of the best and longest running academic quiz programs in the country." That would mean that Bill Walker took over as the Engineer/Technician in 1982... the year that Coleman won the championship. Thanks Bill, for your years of dedicated service to Hi-Q. (I'll bet he could tell some great stories about Hi-Q over the years...maybe he will?)
The new Engineer/Technician is (tba)

Established in Delaware County Pennsylvania in 1948, Hi-Q is the oldest continuing academic quiz competition in the United States. This competition was expanded in 1976 to Washington State, in 1977 to Wisconsin/Michigan, in 1982 to Maine, in 1984 to Arkansas, and in 1987 to Alabama.
Presently, The Farmers & Merchants Bank & Trust, in cooperation with The Kimberly-Clark Corporation and the University of Wisconsin - Marinette, sponsor the program. "We believe the experience and support of academic competition encourages academic achievement, initiative, and good sportsmanship. We feel that the experience gained from this program as a participant or as a supportive spectator is invaluable."
2006 marks the 58th anniversary of the Hi-Q Program and the 30th year of local competition.
Area Schools who will participate in 2006 include:
Beecher-Dunbar-Pembine, Coleman, Crivitz, Catholic Central (Marinette), Faith Baptist, Florence, Gillett, Goodman-Armstrong Creek, Lena, Marinette, Menominee, Niagara, Oconto, Oconto Falls, Peshtigo, Stephenson, Suring, and Wausaukee.
Congratulations to all Hi-Q Participants on a fine 2005 season!
Hi-Q is an academic quiz competition for high school students. Currently eighteen schools from Northeast Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan actively compete. Each school's team is composed of eight students who are counseled by a representative of the school faculty (called a team adviser.)
There are three rounds of contests during the regular Hi-Q season that begin in January each year. Each team competes once in each round, and three teams appear on stage in each contest. At the end of this series of eighteen contests, standings are determined by the total points earned by each team in the three programs in which it competes.
At the conclusion of the first three rounds, final rounds are played consisting of three matches - one semi-final and two finals. The semi-final match will be hosted by the third highest scoring team from the first round. This team will compete against teams four and five. These three teams will start with zero points and compete for the third place spot.
The winner of the semi-final contest will then compete against teams one and two (the first and second highest scoring teams of the first three rounds.) Again, these three teams will begin with zero points. Teams one and two will each host a final championship contest.
Questions are drawn from 14 subjects and based primarily on the content of standard high school courses and general scholastic knowledge that students can be expected to have acquired at school or elsewhere. Guidelines for study and specific reference material are provided when the category is not usually a standard high school course.
Questions are prepared from various reference works of which the students are informed. Subjects covered are American Government, American History, Art History, Biology, Chemistry, Current Events, Geography, Literature, Mathematics, Physics, Shakespeare, Sports, and World History.
Awards: After the finals competition, first, second, and third place teams from that contest win cash awards for their schools of $2,000, $1,500, and $1,000 respectively. Certificates are presented to each member of all of the eighteen school teams.
