Wausaukee high school’s national and
regional champion HI-Q team, regional runner-up Menominee
and third place Oconto Falls were honored Sunday, May 1 at an
awards banquet held at Schussler’s Supper Club in Peshtigo.
Farmers & Merchants Bank & Trust President Thomas Maxwell
presented the winning Wausaukee team with a $2,000 check for its
school, second place Menominee received $1,500 and third place
Oconto Falls $1,000.
Maxwell told the students, advisors, and family members present that
Farmers & Merchants Bank & Trust is proud to be the principal
sponsor of the annual academic quiz competition that fosters
academic achievement. He called it an investment in the future of
young people.
“Former HI-Q participants have gone on to some of America’s finest
universities and I’m sure most of you will do that,” Maxwell told
the students. “You’ll become our future leaders - doctors,
teachers, lawyers, pharmacists – contributing in so many ways to
make this world a better place.”
Kimberly Clark Corp. and UW Marinette are co-sponsors of HI-Q.
Wausaukee won the three round regular season competition totaling 173
points and then went on to win the two round championship match
scoring 111 points. Menominee, last year’s champion, finished
second with 88 points and Oconto Falls was third with 52.
The win qualified Wausaukee to compete in the national
championship HI-Q match on March 30.
In the match, conducted via video conferencing at UW Marinette, Wausaukee
scored 61 points to defeat high school teams from Pennsylvania,
Alabama and Washington.
It was the first time the national HI-Q championship match had taken
place since 1981.

been the HI-Q quizmaster for the past 16 years. His poems about

Hi-Q Poem 2011
Wausaukee
Wausaukee, Wausaukee, Wausaukee
Oh the heights you reached this year!
Regional, National and Galactic Champions
Your triumphs we do cheer!
Wausaukee, WOW-saukee, Whoa-saukee!
“Never before have we seen
A team of such high caliber”
All your proud school doth scream!
Not content to simply score
You racked up points and points galore!
48, 60, then 65, too!
You made it all seem so easy to do!
Hail-saukee, Mighty-saukee, Increda-saukee!
Is what teams from far and near
Will call you from this day
And rightly they may!
For your victory we all do cheer!

Hi-Q Poem 2011
Menominee
Above the turbulent academic sea
Rides the proud Maroons from Menominee!
Charting a course that they hoped would be
A repeat of last year’s Hi-Q Victory!
They had all they needed, from team esprit
To members wise, cleaver and a bit artsy.
They studied, they quizzed and honed their subjects to a degree
That freed their minds of all unnecessary debris.
If they could win again they could scream “Yipee”
Like some half-crazed Hi-Q banshee.
It seems this year it was not to be.
But hold your head up, ye noble from Menominee!
For effort you put forth will someday guarantee
Your success and your glory, just you wait and see!

Hi-Q Poem 2011
Oconto Falls
The students who reside inside the walls
Of the beautiful school in Oconto Falls
Exude a certain contented glow
While they sit and listen to ‘70s disco.
They are calm, cool and all collected
As if their PAC keeps them connected
To some calming spirit that they all know
While they meditate upon the hypnotic yo-yo.
But don’t let all this calmness fool you
For in reality they are out to rule you!
Their Hi-Q team seethes with manic passion
That can make opponents faces ashen!
So, don’t be lulled by their calm state
They are as ambitious as Alexander the Great!
And one day plan to win it all
And rock that fancy music hall!
