2012 Hi-Q
- Menominee High School - First place in Regional
Competition
03/29/12: The team from Menominee High
School turned in an impressive two match performance to win the
2012 Hi-Q championship.
Menominee outscored runner-up Wausaukee 90 to 66 to win its second title in the 36 year history
of the academic quiz competition. Gillett finished third with 37
points.
“I've always believed that hard work results
in good things." said Menominee coach Ron Jackson, “so I really
wasn't surprised that we had such a great year. I've never seen a
group of students that worked as hard as these kids so I'm
extremely happy that they get to realize that hard work really
does result in good things."
Menominee surged to a 19 point lead
over Wausaukee with a 48 point performance in the first title
match at Menominee March 28, and then locked up the championship
scoring 42 more points in the final at Wausaukee the following
day.
Wausaukee, the defending regional and
national champion, scored 29 and 37 points in the two championship
matches to finish with 66 points. Gillett started slowly with 9
points in the opening match and then added 28 in the second to
finish with 37.
Menominee earned its berth in the
championship match by talking first in three rounds of regular
season competition by scoring 168 points.
For winning the championship,
Wausaukee will be presented with a $2,000 check for the school at
the Hi-Q banquet honoring the top three teams next month.
Wausaukee will receive a $1,500 check and Gillett $1,000.
Menominee now advances to compete in
the national championship Hi-Q match April 23. Menominee will
compete via video conference in the library building at UW
Marinette.
This season 18 high schools in Northeast
Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula competed in Hi-Q.
