Hi Kids...so are you ready to solve Coz's Challenge?

Coz's Challenges Archive Question & Answers:

Questions:

How many days would it take Joel to save an even dollar amount (not a cent more or less) if he put a quarter, dime, and a penny into his Galaxies Unlimited piggy bank everyday?  And, what would be the dollar value of the coins in his bank?

Zachary's bicycle was stolen while he was at the swimming pool last summer.  He did not lock it with a chain and padlock like his parents told him, so his parents told him that he would have to pay for a new bike himself.

Zach found just the bike he wanted on sale for $80.00.  He had saved $40.00 in his savings account from his allowance and his parents loaned him the remaining $40.00.  He wanted to pay them back in six weeks.

He mowed lawn every week for a neighbor for $5.00, he weeded the garden for $2.00 a week, and carried in the groceries for his mom and helped put them away for $1.00 each week.

a. What was Zachary's goal?

b. What plans did he make to reach his goal?

c. How long did it take him to reach his goal?

Answers:

How many days Answer (3/03)
25 + 10 + 1 = 36 cents each day.  If we add 36 cents for each day it takes 25 days to reach an even dollar amount of nine dollars!

Did you add that up with a paper and paper?  Using a calculator is another way to get the answer.  First enter .36 + .36 then just keep pressing the = key until there is an even dollar total - which turns out to be $9.00.  If you forgot how many times you pressed the = key just divide $9.00 by .36 to get the number of days (25).  Sometimes there is more than one way to find an answer!

Zachary's Bicycle Answers
Zachary's Goal was to pay back his parents in six weeks. Zachary mowed the lawn, weeded the garden and carried in groceries. It took him 5 weeks to reach his goal ($5 + $2 + $1 = $8/week) $40.00 / $8.00 = 5 weeks.

Cartons of Cans Answers
1.) The best buy is 2 (cartons) for $5.00. If you buy 24 cans for 30 cents each, the total would be $7.20!
2.) If you buy 2 cartons for $5.00, you will save $2.20! (7.20 - 5.00)

How long will it take you? Answer
10 weeks. $10.00 x 20% = $2.00. $20.00 / $2.00 = 10 weeks to save up!
