Kids and Money
by Marguerite LozierI recently did mock interviewing at our local high school. One of the questions I asked the applicants was "If I gave you $2,500.00, what would you do with it?" The responses varied and were very telling. Not one student would save the entire amount. Fair enough, I probably wouldn't either.
Some were going to buy a house, a car, start a business or use it for college. If only $2,500.00 would buy any one of those things it would be a perfect world.
The ability to handle ones finances is one of the most important lessons in life. Our children need to have this knowledge. As parents we need to take the time to help educate them.
Providing your young children with and allowance and requiring that they save a portion of their allowance is a great starting point.
Putting together budgets which include household expenses vs. household income can be very enlightening to your children and might just put them on the fast track to good study habits. Solid education = better paying jobs = financial security = happiness. In the end, what we want most for our children is happiness. Come on parents lets get teaching!
